Commemorating 30 years of Conservation Projects by The Sumitomo Foundation:
New Life for Timeless Art

September 10, 2019 to November 4, 2019

Nothing that has a certain shape can keep its appearance forever.  Cultural properties, which are mostly made of fragile materials such as wood, lacquer and silk, have been handed down until today thanks to repairs which had been applied on them at times of necessity.  Only regular restoration and continuous preservation management can protect those voiceless treasures — it is impossible to preserve cultural properties without appropriate care and repairs.

The Sumitomo Foundation has provided funding for more than 1,000 cultural assets to be restored since it started the contribution 30 years ago.  To commemorate this landmark year, this special exhibition introduces cultural properties from Kyūshū and Okinawa which had been restored by using the grant.

Those cultural properties, which are reflecting the unique history of Kyūshū, where frequent intercultural interactions took place and those Buddhist statues, which were damaged by the recent natural disasters, are on view.  They show us the accomplishment of restoration and traditional craftsmanship, as well as the thought and will of the people who have participated in the preservation of them for generations.

*There is a rotation of the exhibits during the term.
