Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro. Masterpieces of Japanese art

From 12 October 2019 to 9 February 2020, at the Stables of the Visconteo Castle in Pavia, an exhibition compares the charm of Japanese prints by authors such as Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) and Kitagawa Utamaro (1753-1806) with those of artists such as Edouard Manet, Henri Toulouse Lautrec, Pierre Bonnard, Paul Gauguin, Camille Pissarro and others.

The review, Hokusai, Hiroshige, Utamaro. Masterpieces of Japanese art, promoted by the Municipality of Pavia – Culture, Tourism, Education, Youth Policies sector, produced and organized by ViDi, in collaboration with the Civic Museums of Pavia, wants to show the wonders of ukiyo-e, or the refined engravings colors on wood that developed in the Land of the Rising Sun from the seventeenth century, and the profound influence they had on the history of European art, especially French, of the nineteenth century.

The exhibition presents about 170 works, from the Asian art collection of the Johannesburg Art Gallery, formed since 1938, to which are added 29 ukiyo-e prints owned by the Civic Museums of Pavia, dating back to before 1858, and performed by four students of Utagawa Toyokuni, great master of ukiyo-e technique in the Edo Period.
