Shouhaku Art Museum

The Shouhaku Art Museum was opened in March, 1994 with the donation of works from Uemura Shōkō and Atsushi and the contribution of the Kintetsu Railway Co.,Ltd. In the location of old mansion of late Saeki Isamu, the honorary president of the Kintetsu Railway.

The aim of this museum is to collect, conserve, and exhibit the works of the three generation of the Uemura artists, Shōen, Shōkō and Atsushi, including their sketches and drafts, in order to introduce their artistic achievement.

The museum also hosts special exhibitions and public competitions of Japanese paintings to disseminate it and to foster the new generation of artists.

The name of the museum, Shōhaku (松伯), is derived from the combination of “Shō (松 pine tree)” of the artists names of Shōen(松園) and Shōkō (松篁) and the several tens and a hundred pine trees in the garden, and “Haku (伯)” as a master painter gahaku (画伯)and from the name of the donator Saeki (佐伯) or the name of the tea pavilion located within the garden, Hakusentei (伯泉亭).

Shōhaku is also phonetically equal to conifer (松柏), which is an evergreen and thus an auspicious symbol.
