Shoji Hamada Memorial Mashiko Sankokan Museum

Shoji Hamada Memorial Mashiko Sankokan Museum is a public interest incorporated foundation which was established in April, 1977 for the purpose of exhibiting ceramics, lacquer ware, woodwork,  metal work, furniture, textiles and other craft works which had been personally collected by Hamada Shōji, including the conversion of a part of his own residence into a museum. Hamada gathered artifacts not only from Japan, but also worldwide from China, Korea, Taiwan, Pacific Islands, Middle East, Europe and South America, with a wide range of time periods of production, from ancient to modern times.  They are the memorial records of Hamada’s experiences of “taking his hat off” — when he came across with a creation which made him feel that his own works were no match for them, he purchased it to add to his collection. Hamada kept them near around and cherished them, and they inspired him and nourished his creation. Mashiko Sankōkan Museum is serving his wish to share the experience of joy and consideration received from the collected pieces widely with other artisans and the general public who loves arts and craft works, by providing them as “sankō (reference).”
