Journey to Suruga: the Beauty of Tōkaidō

June 6, 2020 to July 19, 2020

During the Edo Period (1603-1868), the nationwide highway (kaidō) system was developed and traveling became in fashion among people.  One of the major highways, Tōkaidō, became a popular subject of paintings and numerous works were produced.  Suruga is a region which is blessed with various scenic viewing spots for Mt. Fuji, famous places of interest and historic sites, and thus it is an indispensable location in the paintings of Tōkaidō.  This exhibition focuses on the landscapes of Suruga and introduces the prosperous world of travel and scenery, such as folding screens of the views of Tōkaidō and The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō (Hōeidō edition) by Utagawa Hiroshige.  The works of Maruyama Ōkyo and his school and Shiba Kōkan are also included in the exhibition because Tōkaidō made it possible for the intellectuals in Suruga to interact with various artists in Kyoto and Edo (present-day Tokyo).  The exhibition provides a wonderful opportunity to explore and reexamine the art and culture of Suruga nurtured by Tōkaidō.
