Splendid Japanese Beauty: From the Museum Collection

September 2, 2019 to January 31, 2020

To commemorate the 10th anniversary of its establishment, Sanno Art Museum presents “Splendid Japanese Beauty:  From the Museum Collection,” an exhibition gathering representative works from its collection of modern Japanese paintings.

At the time of modernization during the Meiji Restoration, Japan adopted the Western social system and had encouraged the importation of Western culture.  Likewise in the world of art, techniques and thoughts of the Western painting were imported and fused with the traditional Japanese paintings such as the Kanō school style, and a new expression called “nihonga” emerged.

In this exhibition of the museum collection, selected works of the pioneers of nihonga such as Yokoyama Taikan, Kawai Gyokudō, Kobayashi Kokei, Maeda Seison and Uemura Shōen are exhibited alongside with the works of Higashiyama Kaii and others, who had created contemporary nihonga which is unbound from tradition.

Please enjoy the rich and gorgeous world of nihonga.
